About Labiaplasty (labia reduction surgery)

Labiaplasty is the surgical reduction, and sometimes reshaping, of the inner labia. This is often performed because the patient is embarrassed by the size of their labia minora. In these instances, labia reduction surgery can help increase the patient's confidence by making them feel more attractive. Large labial lips can sometimes cause discomfort and may also be reduced for this reason.

There are two main ways in which a cosmetic surgeon may perform the surgery. The first is through the use of a laser scalpel. This is often favoured by surgeons because it causes less tissue trauma, therefore improving healing time, and it is also a lot easier to control any bleeding.

Some cosmetic surgeons, however, prefer the use of Iris scissors. These give a much less smooth and precise incision than a laser scalpel, which means the end result mimics the natural appearance of the labia more accurately. Neither method can be considered vastly superior the other. The most important factor in the success of the rhinoplasty operation is the skill and experience of the surgeon.

Before labiaplastly can be performed patients will have a consultation with the surgeon to assess their needs and discuss the procedure. They will also need to undergo a simple urine and blood test. Surgery cannot be performed if the woman is pregnant.

Labia reduction surgery will be performed under general anaesthetic and usually takes between 1 and 2 hours. The length of the operation will depend on the extent of work required. After the operation the patient will experience some degree of pain and discomfort, but this will be controlled through the use if pain medication and should subside after a few days.

Labiaplasty patients are normally allowed to return home the day after surgery. After undergoing labia reduction, any sexual activity should be refrained from for a period of 4-6 weeks. Unless unexpected complications arise, it is safe to return to work 3 to 7 days after having the procedure.

Any scarring will fade significantly in the weeks following surgery. Eventually these scars will be virtually imperceptible, hidden in the natural lines and creases of the labia lips. Complications are rare, but risks of labia reduction surgery include excessive bleeding and post operative infection. In a small number of cases, revision surgery may be required to correct problems arising from the initial operation.

The cost of labiaplasty is generally between £2,500 and £3,400. Anyone considering labia reduction surgery should shop around to find a clinic which is both competitively priced and has a good standard of patient care.
