Vaginoplasty - the surgical tightening of the muscles of the vaginal area - is commonly sought by women who have experienced childbirth. Often this is after alternative methods of vaginal tightening, such as pelvic floor (Kegel) exercises, have had little effect in returning the vagina to its pre-pregnancy state. Slackened muscles can lead to a loss of sensation for both the woman and her partner during sexual intercourse, which can leave the woman feeling depressed and inadequate about the post-pregnancy state of her body.
Vaginal tightening (sometimes nicknamed as a 'designer vagina') can be performed in any cosmetic surgery clinic or hospital which has a surgeon experienced in gynaecological procedures. The surgeon will shorten the length of the vagina using dissolvable stitches, bringing it back to its natural size before it was loosened by childbirth. A small amount of unwanted skin will also be removed in order to reduce excess vaginal lining and tighten the surrounding muscle and soft tissue.
Most patients prefer to have vaginoplasty surgery under general anaesthetic but it can also be performed using a local anaesthetic and sedatives. The operation is usually completed in under an hour. Most cosmetic surgery clinics and hospitals will insist on the patient staying overnight.
Painkillers can be provided after vaginoplasty surgery to help with the discomfort caused by the swelling and any general soreness. Unless unexpected complications arise, recovery is usually quick, with the patient being able to return to work within 5-7 days. The final result of the operation will be evident in about 2-3 weeks, but sexual activity should be avoided for a period of 4 to 6 weeks and only resumed after the all clear from the clinical consultant.
The cost of vaginal tightening in the UK ranges from approximately £2,600 to £4,275.
