Male Breast Reduction

Male breast reduction surgery is becoming more publicised and is being requested by increasing numbers of men each year. Abnormal enlargement of the breasts affects around half of men to some degree at some point in their lives, but is only present in approximately 1 percent of the adult population. The medical term for the condition is Gynaecomastia, and it is caused by an excess of glandular tissue in one or both breasts. Cosmetic surgery is often an effective solution for the embarrassment caused by this condition.

The male breast reduction procedure is often carried out via liposuction. Small, strategic incisions are made underneath the armpit area and a small tube is inserted to remove the fatty tissue. Sometimes it is also necessary to remove the excess glandular tissue from incisions around the nipple. If liposuction is unsuitable, the surgeon will cut away the fatty areas with a scalpel. The whole procedure takes between 1 and 3 hours and most patients will be allowed to return home on the same day.

A Lycra bandage will need to be worn around the chest area for a period of 3 weeks following surgery. The patient should not experience pain following male breast reduction surgery, but there may be some discomfort from the swelling and bruising caused to the operated area. In most instances, the swelling should completely subside within 2 months and the final results of surgery will be visible.

Normal activities, such as going to work, can be resumed after 2 to 3 weeks. Vigorous sports should be left at least 6 weeks after male breast reduction surgery.

Complications are rare, and tend to be the same as for any other cosmetic procedure. This includes bleeding following surgery and infection in the surgical incisions. Loss of sensitivity or hypersensitivity of the nipples can both be caused by breast reduction surgery, but only a very small number of patients experience this. It may be a temporary or permanent side effect.

Male breast reduction surgery can be very expensive, ranging from £1,800 to £4,700, depending on the degree of work needed and the healthcare provider. Looking at the details for several cosmetic surgery clinics will help you find a competitive deal.
