Tummy Tuck Surgery (Abdominoplasty)

Tummy tuck surgery (abdominoplasty) is the surgical removal of excess skin from the abdomen or stomach. There are two main reasons why an individual may seek this type of cosmetic surgery. Most commonly, it is sought by women after childbirth, as the skin is often left loose and never fully returns to its pre-pregnancy state. Losing a large amount of excess weight can cause a similar loss in skin elasticity, making tummy tuck surgery popular among those who have previously struggled with obesity. A considerable reduction in weight is the most common reason for male abdominoplasty.

Abdominoplasty is usually performed under general anaesthetic and takes around 3 hours for the surgeon to complete. The first incision is made from the hip bone and will run just above the pubic line so that any scarring will be hidden. After the excess skin is removed, the surgeon will make a new incision to reposition the belly button in the correct place. Fine stitches will then be used to close all incisions. Surgery can also tighten saggy abdominal muscles.

If the patient needs only minor surgery - for instance, if their problem is loose skin and excessive stretchmarks below the navel - then a mini tummy tuck (partial abdominoplasty) can be performed. This involves only one, smaller incision.

A drainage tube may be fitted after surgery to remove excess fluids from the operation. The wounds will then be dressed and a support garment will need to be worn for up to 4 weeks. Tummy tuck patients can return to work after 2 weeks. Sexual activity must also be avoided during this period and normal activities, such as going to the gym, can be resumed after one month with the doctor's approval.

Abdominoplasty complications are rare. In a very small number of cases the wound may become infected and antibiotics will be required, but most patients find that their scars heal as expected, with the scarring fading significantly in the year following surgery. The skin of the stomach may feel stretched and uncomfortable in the days following the operation but this will sensation will fade. Very occasionally, revision or secondary abdominoplasty may be required to put right problems arising from the initial surgery.

There is no accurate figure for abdominoplasty cost. The price of tummy tuck surgery will vary between areas and clinics and will also depend on the degree of surgery needed by the individual patient. But as a rough guide, you can expect to pay between £3,700 and £5,270.
